The annual ‘Chonburi Buffalo Race’ Festival and ‘Miss Buffalo’ contest is here! October 7- 11, 2011

Chonburi province invites all interested Thais and foreigners to experience this unique Thai festival.
The annual, “wing khwai” or Buffalo Races will be taking place in Chonburi City on Tuesday 11th October 2011. This festival takes place every year to celebrate the rice harvest and mark the end of the Buddhist Lent. It is now apparently the 140th year.

There will also be a fair on the grounds in front of City Hall from 7th-11th October 2011 with the racing taking place on the last day.

Exciting and delectable activities like Thai sports and sales of OTOP products, including food items from each district, each “amphur” in Chonburi.



The water buffalo has always played a significant role in agriculture in Thailand.
In this yearly event, the creatures are seen in more unusual and entertaining ways than ploughing fields. They take part in buffalo races and contests pitting buffalo against man.

The races are taken very seriously by the owners of the buffaloes. Prizes for the first nose past the finishing line guarantee owners go to considerable lengths to ensure their buffaloes are well groomed and in tip-top condition.

Mr.Pakkathorn Teanchai , Deputy Provincial Governor, Chonburi, said that the buffalo racing festival is an important old tradition, a heritage that the people of Chonburi cherish.

The activities on the racing day on October 11 are highlighted by the buffalo race divided into three categories depending on the size of the buffalo: small, medium and large size buffalos. Also, the most beautifully decorated buffalo competition and the funniest buffalo competition.

Beauty pageants and various other fun-filled activities are part of the attractions presented.

- Traditional wagon parade
- Cultural preservation parade from the government and private sectors
- Various buffalo contests such as beautiful types, funny types, etc.
- Sea mussel opening contest
- Beauty contests
- Folk games such as oiled pole climbing, rattan ball, Thai boxing, slingshot shooting, etc.
